TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Brandi Banks scored the tying goal and freshman
Taylor Schwalbe netted the eventual game-winner to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth College, on Saturday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-14-6 overall (8-8-4 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Green drop to 6-17-3 (6-11-3 ECAC Hockey).
Down 1-0 late in the second period, Banks (Burlington, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) led a 2-on-1 rush into the Dartmouth zone. Carrying the puck into the left circle she snuck a shot past Big Green junior goaltender Robyn Chemago (Slave Lake, AB/Slave Lake Minor Hockey), tying the game at 1-1. They tally, which was Banks' first of the season, came with just 13.4 seconds left in the period.
Schwalbe (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's) put the hosts ahead at 14:36 of the third, stealing the puck in the neutral zone and skating in alone on a breakaway. She snapped home her fourth of the year from close range and the Engineers were able to hold on for the victory.
Dartmouth opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period. Freshman Alyssa Baker (Orleans, ON/Nepean) saw the puck deflect in off her skate for her second goal of the season. The tally, which was originally waved off before getting reversed upon replay review, was assisted on by junior Kennedy Ottenbreit (Grayson, SK/Shattuck St. Mary's) and sophomore Hailey Noronha (Newmarket, ON/Whitby Wolves).
The Engineers went 0 for 4 on the power play, while Dartmouth finished 0 for 2. RPI freshman netminder
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) had 28 saves for the win, while Chemago had 21 at the other end of the ice.
