TROY, N.Y. - As part of the athletic department's annual Welcome Back Ice Cream Social, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) year-end student-athlete awards - Freshman of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Richard S. Lyons Career Athlete - as well as the Marvin Anderson Award, were announced with eight individuals being honored. Collecting the most prestigious student-athlete awards the department hands out were freshmen Lovisa Selander and Brendan McNerney; Shanny Lin and Ben Fazio as Athlete of the Year honorees; and Taylor Ten Eyck and Jamie Jackson as the Lyons Award recipients. Shannon O'Brien and John Lynch shared the Anderson Award, presented to the Coach of the Year. 

Each coach had the opportunity to nominate student-athletes and peers for the awards. The final ballot is voted upon by head coaches and administrators from the athletic department. Below are the award winners with their accomplishments included.

Female Freshman Athlete of the Year: Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden / SDE Riksserien) – Ice Hockey
Goaltender … Played 33 games, 31 starts ... Was 9-16-7 … Had 2.11 goals against average and .939 save percentage ... Had school record 1058 saves in 1960:13 minutes ... Third in school history in minutes played … Four shutouts ... ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week four times … ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year finalist ... ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year finalist ... All-ECAC Hockey Third Team … ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team … ECAC Hockey All-Academic … Team Rookie of the Year.

Male Freshman Athlete of the Year: Brendan McNerney (Ardsley, NY / Ardsley) – Baseball
Pitcher … Made 13 appearances, 10 starts ... Went 6-2 with 2.66 earned run average in 61.0 innings ... 48 strikeouts and 31 walks ... Allowed .225 opponent batting average ... Liberty League Rookie of the Week twice ... Liberty League Pitcher of the Week once … All-Liberty League First Team.

Female Athlete of the Year: Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso) – Swimming
Sophomore … Butterfly, backstroke, freestyle and IM ... Team's top female scorer as individual (18 first, 2 second, 3 third) … Set school record in 200 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay … Robison Pool records in 200 butterfly and 200 medley relay … League record in 200 fly … New York State Championship and Association record in 200 fly … First in 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 medley at Liberty League Championship … Second in 200 IM, 400 free relay and 400 medley … First in 200 butterfly and 400 medley relay at New York State Championship … Second in 200 medley and 200 free relay … Third in 100 butterfly … Participated in 200 individual medley, 100 fly and 200 fly at NCAA Championship … NCAA All-America in 200 butterfly with fourth place finish … Liberty League Swimmer of the Week three times … Liberty League All-Academic … New York State All-Academic … CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team … CoSIDA National Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team … CSCAA Scholar All-America.
