TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Steven Collins and Maddie Steinmetz have been selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Men's and Women's Soccer Academic All-District Division III First Teams, respectively, it was announced today. Both are now eligible for National Academic All-America honors.
A two-time captain and senior midfielder from Flemington, N.J, Collins started all 16 games for the Engineers this season, earning Liberty League Honorable Mention. He collected a goal and two assists for four points. Averaging 85.6 minute per match, he took 21 shot attempts, including 12 on goal. Scoring in the season-opener against New Paltz - a 2-1 Engineers victory - he also picked up assists in two other Rensselaer wins (Rhode Island College and Keene State).
Now a three-time all-district selection, Collins is a chemical engineering major and economics minor with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average. A two-time Academic All-America and three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, he has worked as a research assistant in the Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing labs. A member of Rensselaer's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the Hunterdone Central Regional High School graduate has worked with Circle-K as a volunteer and is the Scholarship Chair at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Collins, who was a standout at Hunterdon Central Regional High School, concluded his career with 67 games at Rensselaer, including 54 as a starter. He had five goals and our assists for 14 point, with 56 shots, including 24 on target.
A junior defender out of Malvern, Pa., Steinmetz played in 17 games in 2017, starting 12. She netted a goal - the first of her collegiate career - while recording eight shots (5 on goal). Averaging 56.8 minute per match, her goal was the game-winner against Sage on September 10.
Steinmetz in an architecture major with a 3.97 grade point average. She has twice earned Liberty League Honorable Mention as was the team's Rookie of the Year in 2015. A multiple Liberty League All-Academic and Dean's List honoree, she earned the Phalanx Society White Key Award and is a two-time recipient of the RPI School of Architecture Distinguished Honors Award. A graduate of West Chester East High School, she has worked at Archietra, surveying lots, building with Revit and AutoCAD and designing buildings as well as done research designing theoretical housing with concepts from 18th century.
Through 54 career game at RPI, including 49 as a starter, Steinmetz has one goal and one assist for three points. She has 27 shots (16 on goal) with one game-winning tally. Helping the Engineers to 25 clean sheets in three seasons, she has missed just three matches in her career, including only one in the last two years.
The men's soccer team went 8-6-2 with a 3-4-2 mark in Liberty League play. The Rensselaer women's side posted an 8-8-2 overall record, going 4-4-1 in the conference.
