UTICA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field teams participated in the Utica College Pioneer Invitational 4 and the Engineers posted five victories, two runner ups and six third place finishes. Team scores were not compiled in this meet.
Rensselaer's most impressive performances came in the men's distance events with the top four finishers in the 3000 meters, a win in the mile and two of the top three to cross in the 5000 meters.
Senior Ben Fazio won the men's 3000 meters with a time of 8:18.57, which was six seconds in front of teammate Grant O'Connor (8:24.04), a sophomore. Senior Matthew Cicciu was third (8:29.12) and sophomore Sean O'Connor was fourth (8:31.05). There were 29 runners in the 3000 meters.Â
Senior Garrett Davis won the 23-person mile event with a time of 4:26.51, which was just ahead of the runner-up, who finished in 4:26.51. And in the 5000 meters, freshmen Joe Pisacano (15:52.17) and Jake Kloman (15:55.29) were second and third, respectively. The winner of the 27-runner race, former RPI standout Jacob Andrews, crossed in 15:46.30.
Rensselaer's men's 4x400Â team of Jason Hall, Patrick Butler, Max Drexler and Dale Kelly, also won, defeating seven other teams by nearly three seconds with a time of 3:23.14 (3:26.58).Â
Other impressive performances came from freshman Dino Martinez in the 500 (1:07.81) and Frank Sinapi in the 800 (1:59.50), both of whom were third in their respective events. Junior
Maddie Dery was third in the women's mile with a time of 5:22.56 and sophomore
Meaghan Podlaski finished fifth in the 3000 (11:26.83).Â
Sophomore
Jillian Salkind won the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters, defeating 18 others, and senior Michael Pesanello earned victory in the weight throw, defeating 42 others with a maximum effort of 16.99 meters. The runner up reached 16.73.
Freshman George Gonatas was third in the shot put with a distance of 14.41 meters.Â
Both RPI teams, which are coached by
Colin Tory, participate in the New York State Championship Meet at St. Lawrenc next weekend.
