TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) top two hitters combined for four hits and four runs and the Engineers scored in every inning in defeating Clarkson University, 9-0 in five innings, in the winners' bracket game of the Liberty League Softball Tournament at Doris Robison Field. RPI improves to 25-12 and advances to Sunday's championship round, while the Golden Knights fall to 21-17 and move into the elimination bracket. Clarkson plays again on Saturday against either Skidmore College or Rochester Institute of Technology for the right to advance to Sunday.
Rensselaer's leadoff hitter, junior
Victoria Greco (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland), went 2 for 4 with two runs and
Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD / Linganore), a junior who batted second, was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs. RPI's offense finished with eight hits, but it was more than enough for senior pitcher
Stephanie Caudle (Gainesville, FL / Gainesville), who allowed just three hits - all singles - and no walks to improve to 14-4. She struck out one.
The Engineers, the visitors, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings with single runs in each of the first two frames. Greco started the game with a double to left field and moved to third on a bunt single by Puhl. An errant throw on a pick-off attempt allowed Greco to score. Rensselaer doubled its lead the following inning with another unearned run.
Three runs in the third inning, thanks to a
Cam Caswell (Prospect, CT / Woodland Regional) sacrifice fly and a two-out error on a fly ball in the outfield, made it a 5-0 score.
RPI added three more runs in the fourth for an 8-0 edge. Greco started things when she singled and Puhl was hit by a pitch. After an out, Caudle walked and junior catcher
Christine White (Acushnet, MA / Tabor Academy) followed with a single up the middle to score two runs. Caswell then registered her second RBI of the day on a fielder's choice.
Caudle singled up the middle to score Puhl in the top of the fifth inning for the final margin.Â
Jamie Bridge (Plymouth, CT / Terryville), a senior, started for the Golden Knights and took the loss. She allowed five runs (1 earned) on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in dropping to 12-9. Junior outfielder Summer Lancette (Oneida, NY / Oneida) had two hits for Clarkson, which had five errors on the day.
