With the construction of the East Campus Athletic Village well underway, the Rensselaer Women's Varsity Basketball Alumnae have come together to honor former teammate Laurie "Shoe" Hendler Yacono '86 in the form of a locker room in her name at the new arena.
Those wishing to support RPI women's basketball and honor Laurie Hendler Yacono '86, can make a gift online at www.rpi.edu/campaign and designate their gift to the East Campus Varsity Basketball Laurie Hendler '86 Fund, or by calling Shelley Gebhardt at (518) 276-6438 or Abder Benghanem at (518) 276 - 3339.
Hendler, who recently passed away, was admired by the entire Rensselaer community - teammates, coaches, staff, alumni, and friends. She remains the school's all-time leader in assists with 393, an honor that personifies the Rensselaer community, past and present.
"I encourage you to join us in support of women's basketball at Rensselaer through a gift to the Laurie Hendler '86 Basketball Fund," states former college roommate and teammate, Linda Pitzi Jojo '87. "Your gift counts toward Renaissance at Rensselaer: The Campaign for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and will be an insipiration to Rensselaer women athletes for many years to come."
A fund has been established to name a women's basketball locker room after Laurie in the new East Campus Athletic Village basketball arena. So far over $81,700 in gifts and pledges have been donated by friends and teammates of women's varsity basketball enroute to the ultimate goal of $200,000.
"Laurie Hendler gained the respect and friendship of her teammates, as well as aquaintances. If each one of us calculates the value of the friendships we made on the court at Rensselaer, I am sure we can fully fund the women's locker room in the East Campus Athletic Village, honor Laurie, and set an example for new generations of women players," said Karen Allen Lynch '87, who also roomed and played basketball with Hendler at RPI.
