Plattsburgh Downs Union in RPI Classic

Radigan tallies a goal and an assist in 2-1 victory

TROY, N.Y. – Junior forward Liz Radigan scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to break a tie and lift the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Union College in the 2009 RPI Classic at Renwyck Field. The Cardinals improve to 3-0, including two wins in the tournament, while the Dutchwomen fall to 1-1.

Radigan (Troy, NY), who assisted on the first goal of the game, scored the game-winning marker at 73:05 when she converted on a penalty kick. She helped Plattsburgh to a 1-0 lead at 15:38 when she beat a defender to the ball at the edge of the box on the far side and crossed to junior midfielder Leigh Metcalf (Baxter, ON), who one-timed it past the goalkeeper into the right corner.

Union tied the game in the 32nd minute when sophomore Jessica Strang (Rotterdam, NY), who had two goals on Saturday, passed the ball up from midfield to junior Katie McLean (Newton, MA). She raced up the field, one-touched the ball around a defender and beat a diving goalie into the low left corner of the net. The goal was the second of the weekend for McLean.

Freshman Alina Greiser (Florida, NY) earned the win in goal for the Cardinals as she stopped four shots. Junior Abby Stohler (West Hartford, CT) suffered the loss for the Dutchwomen despite making six saves. Union was outshot in the game, 16-9. Both teams had four corner kicks.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Radigan, senior defender Kaitlin Collica (Baldwin, NY) and junior midfielder Emily Riley (Massena, NY) from Plattsburgh State and senior midfielder Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA), junior midfielder Caitlin O'Donnell (Hampden, MA) and senior midfielder Katie Weinstein (Marblehead, MA) from Union.

Plattsburgh returns to the pitch on Saturday when it hosts Castleton State at 7pm. Union is back in action on Wednesday against Clark at 6:30pm in Schenectady.
