TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in women's tennis and women's lacrosse and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been selected.
Jessica Sitzer was named the Performer of the Week in women's tennis, while
Alissa Peterson earned Rookie of the Week in women's lacrosse.
A junior from Rockaway, N.J., Sitzer helped the Engineers to a 1-1 week, winning both her singles matches as well as both of her doubles matches. In RPI's 9-0 victory over SUNY-Cobleskill, she won at second singles (6-3, 6-3) and first doubles (8-2) with partner
Christine Roe (Phoenix, AZ/North). She then won at second singles (7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-0) and first doubles (8-2) in the Engineers narrow, 5-4, loss to Mount Holyoke.
Sitzer, who is a graduate of Morris Hills High School, has had a solid spring campaign through five contests. She has gone 3-2 in singles action, including a 3-1 mark at the second flight. She has also posted a 3-2 record in first doubles. Sitzer helped lead RPI during its fall '09 season, going 2-5 in singles action and 3-4 in doubles.
In three seasons, Sitzer has compiled a 15-12 record in singles and a 17-7 mark in doubles. One of her top seasons was 2008, when she posted a 7-2 record at fifth singles and went 7-1 at second doubles with Roe.
Peterson, a freshman midfielder out of Gaithersburg, Md., had an outstanding week for the Engineers, recording team-highs in goals (5), assists (2), points (7), shots (9), ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (4). She also had a draw control win to help RPI to a 1-1 week.
The Quince Orchard High School graduate scored two goals and added two assists in a 17-7 loss to #3 Hamilton. She then posted three goals, with a game-best three caused turnovers, as RPI defeated William Smith for the first time in program history, 9-8, in double-overtime.
It marks the third Rookie of the Week this season for Peterson, who is second on the squad in scoring with a team-high 16 goals and seven assists for 23 points. In addition to leading the team in caused turnovers (10) and ground balls (26), she also has a squad-best four free position tallies.
The women's lacrosse team (4-3; 1-1 Liberty League) returns to action this weekend when it visits area and Liberty League-rivals Skidmore and Union on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively. The women's tennis team is back on the court on April 14, hosting SUNY-Cobleskill at Sharp Courts (4pm).
