TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its year-end awards in women's lacrosse and five Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been honored. Freshman
Alissa Peterson was named the conference's Rookie of the Year and was an All-League Second Team selection, while senior
Sam Fennessey earned First Team honors. Joining Peterson on the Second Team was junior
Tracy Breslin, while junior
Afton Marshall and senior
Ariana Hood garnered Honorable Mention.
A midfielder from Gaithersburg, Md., Peterson collected Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the Second Team after leading the squad in goals (31), ground balls (39), free position tallies (7-of-13) and caused turnovers (15). She is also second in points (40) as a starter in all 13 games. The former Quince Orchard High School standout ranks ninth in the Liberty League in goals (2.38) and is third in ground balls per game (3.00). A six-time conference Rookie of the Week selection, she has recorded at least one point in 12 games, including eight with three points or more.
Fennessey, a midfielder out of Gansevoort, N.Y., leads the squad and ranks second in the Liberty League in game-winning goals with three. She is third on the team in goals (15), ground balls (33) and caused turnovers (10), while finishing fourth in points (22), shots (41) and draw controls (19). The Saratoga Springs High School graduate has at least one point in 12 games, including seven with two or more, and is a Liberty League All-Academic selection.
Breslin, a defender from Latham, N.Y., has helped RPI rank fourth in the Liberty League in caused turnovers per game (8.46) and post the third-best goals against average (9.69). Individually, she is third on the team in caused turnovers, with at least one in eight games. The Shaker High School graduate, who has started all 13 games, is sixth on the team in ground balls with 25.
An attack from Windham, N.H., Marshall leads the Engineers in goals (31), assists (17), points (48), shots (76), shots on goal (54) and man-up goals (2). Among the league leaders, she is fourth in assists, sixth in points, seventh in shots per game (5.85) and ninth in goals. A two-time Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, she has recorded at least two points in every contest, including five games with five or more points, and has a goal in every game, including four contests with three or more tallies. She is a graduate of Salem High School.
Hood, a goalie from Severn, Md., has backstopped the Engineers to the third best goals against average in the conference (9.69). She ranks 45th nationally in goals against average and third among the Liberty League goaltenders. In the conference, she's fifth in save percentage (.454) and eighth in saves per game (7.62). The Old Mill High School graduate also has 20 ground balls and four caused turnovers this season.
The women's lacrosse team (8-5; 5-3 LL), which is led by head coach
Leslie DeLano, takes to the field on Friday, making their first-ever appearance in the Liberty League Tournament against the top-ranked team in the nation and championship host Hamilton College. Entering as the fourth-seed, the Engineers will play the Continentals (16-0; 8-0 LL) at 2:30pm, with the winner advancing to Saturday's Championship game, for the right to play in the NCAA Tournament.
