Erik Whiting has been recognized. The senior thrower was named the Field Performer of the Week for the sixth time this season, including each of the last four weeks.
Whiting, who hails from Fultonville, N.Y., concluded an outstanding senior season last week, garnering National All-America in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships. Making his first-ever trip to Nationals, he finished eighth in a field of 17 participants, with a personal-best distance of 56.77 meters.
A six-time Liberty League Field Performer of the Week selection, he placed third or higher in nine meets this season. In addition to four victories, Whiting placed in the top two six times. He also recorded nine straight NCAA Provisional marks in his event this season.
Whiting also excelled in the discus throw this year, competing in the event in seven meets. He finished 11th or higher in the discus, including five top-three finishes and four victories.
Several of his top performances in 2010 came at the Liberty League Championships and the NYSCTC Championships. At the conference meet, he claimed victory in both the hammer throw and the discus, while finishing third in the shot put. For his efforts, he was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer.
Whiting then repeated those same results at the State Meet, garnering his second straight victory in the hammer throw, while claiming the win in the discus on his way to being named the Outstanding Field Performer of the Year.
In his four-year career, the Fonda-Fultonville High School graduate earned seven titles, including six during the outdoor season. Four of his titles were earned in 2010 as the dual champion at Liberty League and States.
