TROY, N.Y. – Three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been selected to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 1 College Division Track & Field Teams, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Ariel Hubert,
Garrett Harms and
Casey Lewis were all named to the First Team in women's and men's track & field, respectively. As First Team honorees, all three are now eligible for National Academic All-America consideration.
Hubert, a senior from Newport, N.H., is a biology major with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. A multiple Dean's List and Liberty League All-Academic selection, she captained both the women's cross country and track & field teams this season, leading the cross country squad to the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history. Additionally, she helped RPI win the Liberty League Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and posted second and third overall at the New York State Championships, respectively.
The former Greater Claremont Christian High School standout, who is a member of the Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, is also a Rensselaer Leadership Award honoree and was recently selected as the recipient of the 2010 Ballesian Prize, given to RPI's top academic student-athlete. A certified EMT, Hubert will attend medical school in the fall of 2010.
A dual major in nuclear and mechanical engineering, Harms carried a cumulative GPA of 3.94 last year. The junior out of Newburyport. Mass., who has been recognized on the Dean's List in multiple semesters, is a Liberty League All-Academic selection and an RPI Medalist. One of the top multi-event competitors for the Engineers in 2010, Harms won the Decathlon at the New York State Championships, helping RPI to second overall after winning five of the 10 events. In addition to leading the Engineers to titles at both the indoor and outdoor Liberty League Championships, he also placed second in the Pentathlon at the Indoor State Meet.
Harms, who is a former standout at Newburyport High School, is a member of several honor societies, including the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society, the American Nuclear Society and Alpha Nu Sigma. The recipient of the Dyce Prize, which honors students with high scholastic abilities and constructive leadership, and the Founders Award, Harms also serves a tutor to his fellow peers on campus. He has interned at Proctor & Gamble Manufacturing.
A senior who hails from Springvale, Maine, Lewis is a biomedical engineering major with a 3.77 cumulative GPA. A Dean's List selection in seven semesters and a multiple Liberty League All-Academic, he helped RPI to the team titles at the conference's indoor and outdoor championships, claiming a victory in the pole vault for his first individual title. He also placed fifth in the pole vault at the indoor State Meet, as the Engineers won the team title.
The Sanford High School graduate is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society as well as the RPI Biomedical Engineering Society. He is listed as an inventor on three separate U.S. Patents and has served a co-op with Hansen Medical in California. He will intern with AngioDynamics this summer before pursuing his Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University in the fall.
