11 4 2010-11: Women's Tennis Engineers Successful Campaign

Jessica Sitzer
In reflecting back on Rensselaer's recently completed athletic season, it quickly becomes obvious that there were – yet again – many memorable individual and team accomplishments, as well as other significant events that occurred. In an effort to relive, remember and celebrate some of our student-athletes and staff members who played major roles in making those occasions a reality, we introduce 11 4 2010-11.

The story below is one in the 11-part series, which will run throughout the next couple of months. The events are not ranked in any particular order. For the full list, along with some 'honorable mentions', eventually, please click HERE.

Women's Tennis Turns In Milestone 2010-11 Campaign

The Rensselaer women's tennis team put together a fantastic 2010-11 season, thanks to strong leadership from its upperclassmen and timely contributions from its up and coming freshmen.

Led by second-year head coach Erica Hollot, the Engineers' 13 victories, which were a school record, were also just one fewer than team had amassed through the three previous seasons combined. The 17 matches played was the most in school history

Coming off a 2009-10 campaign, in which the team went 6-7, the 2010-11 squad got off to a slow start opening with a 2-2 record after four matches. RPI then defeated area-rival Union College on October 12, before heading into the 2010 New York State Tournament. At states, two doubles teams and two singles competitors made the quarterfinal round, before bowing out.

Rensselaer opened the spring portion of its schedule on the right foot, winning all four of its matches on the team's annual trip to Hilton Head, S.C. After a tough loss at Mount Holyoke College (8-1) on April 2, the Engineers went on a five-match winning streak, which included wins over Smith College (5-1), SUNY-Oneonta (6-3) and Union (8-1) for the second time.

A loss to St. Lawrence (7-2) in the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament didn't deter the club, which bounced back to beat the Dutchwomen (6-3) for the third time in 2010-11.

Individually, the Engineers were led by senior Jessica Sitzer (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills), who held down the first singles position, posting an 8-9 record (8-10 overall). Teaming with junior Zosia Casterline (Farmingdale, MI/Farmingdale) and freshman Emily Broadbent, she compiled a 12-6 mark at first doubles.

Standout freshman Christina Ciamarra (Woodbury, MN/Newtown) notched a team-high 15 singles victories (15-4), including a perfect 11-0 record in the fourth flight, while classmate Megan Olson (Rochester, NY/Penfield) also had a strong first season, going 11-5 in singles play, including 11-2 in the fifth flight.
