TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Matt Vitagliano has been chosen to the 2016 Academic All-America Division III Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), becoming the eighth Rensselaer student-athlete to earn the prestigious honor in 2015-16. He is the fourth track & field/cross country recipient.
Vitagliano (Clear Brook, VA / James Wood) competes in the triple jump and long jump and has been All-Liberty League First Team three times. He won league championships in the triple twice - once indoor and once outdoor - and the long jump at the 2016 Indoor Championship. A mechanical engineering major with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average, he helped the Engineers to their eighth consecutive Liberty League Championship and a second place finish at the New York State Championship Meet.
Rensselaer's other track & field/cross country were Maddie Dery (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac), Jaime Lord (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) and Andrea Ukleja (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills). Dery was named to the First Team, while Lord and Ukleja were Third Team selections.
Also chosen from RPI were Teague Florio (Southampton, NY / Southampton), a third team choice in football; Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD / Linganore), a first team honoree in softball; Jamie Jackson (Belfast, ME / Belfast Area), a golfer who was tabbed for the at-large second team after earning third team last year; and Shanny Lin (El Paso, TX / El Paso), a swimmer who was named to the at-large third team.
As of March, Rensselaer had 102 CoSIDA Academic All-America student-athletes, which ranked 38th in all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA and Canadian institutions. RPI had the 11th most selections - fourth among Division III schools - since 2000.
